Program Note

Voices of the King (2015) is composed for Symphonic Band and Choir. This song conveys the appreciation of the royal grace to His Majesty the King Bhumibol Adulyadej. As well as offering the very first royal supreme command, “We shall reign with righteousness for the benefits and happiness of the Siamese people”. The song is written in the qualifying and feelings that arise through remix and the use of various instruments. The song is divided into three parts.

1. Suvarnabhumi – In this part, the composer has imagined a ship surfing the waves to Suvarnabhumi or Thailand. Suvarnabhumi means the land of gold. The land that is plentiful and tranquility. The people are all very happy and friendly. Nevertheless, the land is not always peaceful. Every time something serious happens, the prestige of the king will always lead the people to overcome the obstacles and find peace again.

2. Virtues (Rajādhamma 10) – The tenfold virtues are the principles to rule of King. Throughout the reign of His Majesty the King, he consistently practices all his royal duties comply the virtues. In this piece, the composer has used Pali words of the tenfold virtues to show the appreciation of the nobility of His Majesty the King. The tone of the music is based on the meaning of the words. The characteristic of Thai tradition folk songs is also used the show the uniqueness of Thailand with the melody and rhythm that expresses the happiness of the people.

3. The Promise – In this part, the composer has replicated the day royal coronation on Friday, May 5th 1950. It begins with sound signal of bugles, followed by a cannon salute in honor of 21 shots (traditionally a salute of 21 rounds will be fired to honor the Head of State). In this piece uses the very first royal supreme command to demonstrate His Majesty the king’s promise to the royal duties, “We shall reign with righteousness for the benefits and happiness of the Siamese people “.
