Program Note

The Battle of Maiyarap is an important episode in the Ramayana epic. The story arose when the giant Maiyarap, the ruler of the underworld, was ordered by Ravana to kidnap Rama and kill him. Maiyarap has kidnapped Rama and brought him to prison in the underworld. Hanuman followed Rama and fought through various levels until winning and killed Maiyarap. This song describes the fighting atmosphere of this battle. At the beginning of the song, there is a chaotic atmosphere of warfare. In the middle, a trumpet solo is used to depict Hanuman’s descent into the abyss to steal Rama, before a graceful melody at the end conveys Hanuman’s victory over Maiyarap.
