Program Note

Overture for Winds (“syncopa!”) is the overture for wind ensemble composed for beginning ensemble. The simple melody is being exchanged between different musical instruments in which they have different roles of being the melody and harmony. The piece is separated into three sections: fast – slow – fast, each have different musical characteristics. The piece ends with the melody from the slow section and ending in a majestic manner!

“Syncopa” comes from the syncopation rhythmic syllable of Kodaly’s Method. This syncopated rhythm is in different places in the piece. Music teachers can use this piece to apply to their lesson in introducing the students to syncopation.
